“Beyond Health Moment” is a unique content series that allows us to celebrate the many incredible people that French Hospital has had the privilege to serve. Follow along to hear from patients, staff, and the SLO Community about their special Beyond Health story at French Hospital. With an extensive and complicated health record, four-time cancer survivor and local San Luis Obispo resident, Joey Chavez is no stranger to the dire need of urgent and critical medical attention. Having survived Hodgkin’s Lymphoma twice, an episode of Colon Cancer, Thyroid Cancer, and open-heart surgery, Joey was under the impression that he had to travel out of town for the quality care that his conditions required.
It wasn’t until this past spring when his wife rushed him to the French Hospital Medical Center’s Emergency Department at 4:30 a.m. that his thinking changed. The severity of Joey’s illness kept him in French Hospital’s ICU for a week, and he recounts how every nurse, staff member, and volunteer truly cared for him with compassion. He claims that the excellent service he received was not only because of the professionalism and top-quality care but the way everyone he encountered went beyond any expectations he had.
As a huge proponent for French Hospital, Joey whole-heartedly supports our French Hospital’s holistically designed campus to bring more patients the comfort and healing they need.
More About the Beyond Health Movement
Joey spent much of his time during his week-long stay taking advantage of French Hospital’s current healing garden and green spaces located throughout the campus. The Beyond Health movement will enable Your New French Hospital to build upon the existing amenities that promote the wellbeing of patients and their loved ones.
As research has proven, stress can be significantly reduced by incorporating green spaces and gardens with views dominated by trees, flowers, or water and art. Your New French Hospital will address the whole patient with more comforting amenities including expanded green spaces, healing gardens, artwork adorning the lobby and hallways, and more public areas to soften the clinical aspect of the hospital and bring joy to patients and visitors.
Our Plans for Your New French Hospital Include:
– Calming rooftop garden terrace providing patients, loved ones, and caregivers a space for sensory stimulation, socializing, and outdoor activities
– New pedestrian-oriented entry court and plaza with ornamental shade trees, decorative landscaping, and colorful pavement patterns
– Tranquil exterior cafe patio adorned with lush foliage, providing respite from the bustle of the hospital
– Peaceful interfaith chapel for hospital patients and their families to pause, reflect, and decompress during emotional times
