On January 25, 2020, the French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) team and local community celebrated a monumental milestone in the Beyond Health movement with a Grand Opening Celebration of the Oppenheimer Family Center for Emergency Medicine.

The San Luis Obispo community came together to commemorate the new and recently completed Emergency Department. This new modernized facility is the first of many steps in the revolution of health care on the Central Coast. To celebrate, local community members and staff enjoyed a day of Beyond Health festivities including self-guided tours, health and wellness booths, family activities and complimentary refreshments.

The Oppenheimer Family Center for Emergency Medicine will revolutionize local health care through the expansion of emergency services for San Luis Obispo County residents. The new Emergency Department will deliver personalized care for the unique Central Coast lifestyle with the compassionate and tender care that FHMC has provided all along.

Emergency services are the cornerstone to a vibrant and accessible health care system, and an essential part of the Beyond Health movement. As the premier cardiac center in San Luis Obispo County and a designated stroke center, FHMC has experienced a significant increase in emergency room visits in an outdated and undersized facility built 45 years ago. To continue providing the emergency care the community deserves, an expansion for FHMC’s Emergency Department was inevitable.

The new facility was designed for a high volume of emergency patients with a very strong commitment to comfort, efficiency, holistic healing, and privacy. At the forefront of cutting-edge emergency medicine, the new Emergency Department features 18 private treatment rooms, compared to the semi-private rooms and five-bed ward that previously existed. Specialized rooms are designated for critical care, infectious disease isolation, geriatrics, pediatrics, and orthopedic emergencies, as well as fast-track rooms for patients with less urgent conditions. It also provides a sizable waiting area for families, essential triage rooms, and a centralized nurse’s station with sophisticated monitoring capabilities.

We’d like to thank not only those who came to celebrate the new Emergency Department, but also those who helped make this vision possible through their continued generosity. We extend a special thank you to Peter and Mary Beth Oppenheimer, whose transformational gift made possible the completion of the Oppenheimer Family Center for Emergency Medicine.
