2022 Louis Tedone, MD Humanitarian Award Recipients

Bill and Cheryl Swanson have a long history of philanthropy in the San Luis Obispo community, which is a special place to them both. Bill and Cheryl both grew up in Los Osos, and Bill earned his industrial engineering degree from Cal Poly. Now retired as the Chairman and CEO of Raytheon Company, he and Cheryl returned to San Luis Obispo and have a passion to see our community continue to thrive. Both Bill and Cheryl have contributed to many worthy causes including Cal Poly and French Hospital Medical Center. They made a transformational gift of $2.75 million to the Beyond Health campaign to support the Swanson Family Chapel.

It is important for Bill and Cheryl to give back to the Central Coast community that they love. Besides a strong desire to enhance health care services, both are also strong advocates for education. Bill currently participates on numerous boards, including the Cal Poly President’s Cabinet and Cal Poly Foundation. He is also vice chairperson emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and a former honorary chair of MATHCOUNTS.

Although they have traveled the world, their hearts remain dedicated to their hometown. As true philanthropists, Bill and Cheryl are devoted to improving the quality of life in our community and leaving a legacy for future generations.
